Fabric Group

The members of the Fabric Group are Mike Wilcox, Ken Spensley, John Dransfield, Adrian Jickells, Jamie Walsh and the Vicar with Derek Smart as Chairman. Mike Wilcox and Ken Spensley have oversight of the Church (and the public areas of the Guildhouse) and the Hall respectively.  John Dransfield co-ordinates the work in the Churchyard and Adrian Jickells is the point of contact for all the other associated buildings. Where a big development takes place, a project team will manage the planning and oversee the work.

The Quinquennial Inspection by the Church Architect took place in July 2003 and the formal report is awaited.    A recent survey of the Church was carried out following suspicions of death watch beetle.    A very limited infestation was found and treated and the woodwork of the Church was given an otherwise clean bill of health.     People will have seen repairs taking place to the weathervane that became necessary due to deterioration of the main assembly and its mountings.

The previous, attractive but vulnerable, path lights alongside the Hall have been replaced with high level lamps which have the advantage of being less susceptible to vandalism and are much less expensive.

The dedicated team under John Dransfield continues with the big task of keeping the grounds in good condition - and are always looking for more volunteers

Considerable efforts have been put into making the Hall heating boiler more reliable.      It is still early days but recent experience has given grounds for optimism.    Recurring problems have arisen with the floor in the Hall but recent investigations by David Adderley and a programme of refitting lead us to believe that this problem may also have been resolved.

Work currently being planned includes a refurbishment of the Choir Vestry, repairs and improvements to some of the Clergy's houses, updating of the fire and security alarm systems and improvements to the Audio-Visual equipment in the Hall.

Many people contribute to the work of the Fabric Committee and this assistance is invaluable. But more offers of assistance are always welcome. Anyone who can contribute general support in care and upkeep, or any special skills that could be available as need arises, is invited to get in touch with Derek on  derek@longdon1.demon.co.uk  or any member of the Committee.
