FAQ

Common questions about thanksgiving and baptism

Q.     When do thanksgiving services take place?
A.     Thanksgivings usually take place in the church on the second Sunday of a month at 3:00 p.m., but could be conducted at a different venue or time by arrangement.

Q.     When do baptism services take place?
A.     Baptisms take place on the third Sunday of a month, either during the 9:30 a.m. family service or, more usually, at a special service at 3:00 p.m.

Q.     Do we have to be living in the parish to have our child baptised?
A.     Normally people are expected to go to their local parish church for baptism. People who are regular worshippers at the church and are also on the Parish Electoral Roll, but who live outside the parish, are also entitled to baptism in the church they attend. If you are in doubt about this, please contact me.

Q.      What if I am unsure about making the baptism promises?
A.     The church is here to help people to explore what they believe about God. Why not join us in our Sunday worship before you decide on a service? We run a crèche and children's groups for children up to the age of 14 during the 9:30 a.m. family service. We also run a number of courses that help to examine the Christian faith. The Parish Office have details. If you are uncertain about making a public declaration of commitment to Jesus Christ and making the baptism promises, why not have a thanksgiving service now and take time to be sure about what you believe? It is far better for your child if you can make the baptism promises with real conviction, knowing how you are going to help them to take their place in the life of the church. If in doubt, please contact me.

Q.     How many godparents do we need for a baptism?
A.     There is no strict rule about this. Usually there will be two godparents of the same sex as the child and one of the other sex. The parents could act as godparents themselves. What is most important is that the godparents are able to make the promises that form an important part of the baptism service.

Q.     Do godparents need to have been baptised and confirmed?
A.     Godparents should have been baptised. They do not strictly have to have been confirmed, but given the promises they will be making, it makes sense that they have a Christian faith themselves.

Please note: Sponsors for a thanksgiving do not need to have been baptised.een confirmed, but given the promises they will be making, it makes sense that they have a Christian faith themselves.
