Parish Mentoring Policy

Parish Mentoring Policy

Knowle Parish Church

Policy for Mentors of Young People (under 18 and minimum school year 7)

Introduction.
Knowle Parish Church recognises that mentoring is an important way of supporting young people in their Christian growth.  Mentoring can guide and encourage young people to take on the challenges of the Christian faith.  It should seek to build a secure foundation for a young person to explore and practice the key teachings of Christianity, to be encouraged in what they succeed in, guided in areas that they struggle with and be increasingly released into God's purpose for their lives.

Context.
Knowle Parish Church seeks to ensure that its work with children and young people is within a framework of policies, procedures and practices that reflect the highest standards of care and safety.  This framework protects the interests of young people, reassures parents/carers and gives adults working with young people the confidence that they have security and support from the Church.
Church leaders will often be involved in mentoring as an important part of their role.  This policy extends to more structured and long term mentoring arrangements with young people.
For these circumstances, the Church keeps a register of adults who are considered appropriate for the role of mentor with young people under 18 years old.  This support is not considered appropriate for children under school year 7.

Register of mentors.
Those people on the register of mentors are:
cleared through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) by the Diocese at the request of the Church;
members of Knowle Parish Church;
over 21 years old or paid youth workers;
given a copy of the Parish Policy for Child Protection and made aware of its contents;
given a copy of the Parish Guidelines for Mentors, made aware of its contents and have agreed to the principles, practices and procedures;
known and approved by the Youth Leader;
known and approved by the Vicar.

Procedures.
Members of the congregation will be informed on a regular basis that the Church has approved procedures and structures for the mentoring of young people.
Parents/young people who wish to have the support of a mentor should contact the Youth Department.  The agreed pairing will be recorded and a note kept of the times and location of meetings.

Only those mentors on the Church's approved list are supported and monitored by the Church and as such are accountable for their procedures and practices.

This policy has been approved by the PCC on 23 May 2007.
